I did the Kilo tonight. Not my favorite event but I rode well for me and finished 2nd. I did a 1:09.516 and lost by about 1/2 second. Results from USA cycling website below.
Christopher Best (Utah Premier) covered a kilometer in 1:08.969 to win the gold medal in the highly competitive men’s 45-49 category. He bested silver medalist Curtis Tolson (Texas Roadhouse) who clocked a 1:09.516 and Kipp Metzger (Team RPM) who clocked a 1:09.695. Gregory Pshsnychniak (Ouch) and Victor Williams (Natural Grocers) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.
Wed Point Race
The race was a 20K point race which is 60 laps on this track. There were 10 sprints every 2K or 6 laps.
The race started off right with Steve winning the first sprint while i sat back a bit. After the sprint the pace stayed high for a couple of more laps and as the leaders eased up I launched a counter with 1.5 laps to go and got a good gap. The officials relegated me in the sprint for passing under the leaders but I thought they were swinging up track and I never left the track surface so I got 0 points but I did have about 1/3 of a lap lead. I settled into a tempo and was soon joined by 4 more guys. We were working fairly well together and
I won the 3rd sprint as we were getting close to gaining a lap. At this point Steve was in a chase group of 2 so I slowed the group down both to wait for Steve and to try not to take the laps so that I could get some more easy points. Steve got on and were took the lap as there were too many guys in the break and someone tried to jump across to see who they could strand back there.
After a couple of more sprints and attacks I got away with 3 more guys. Steve came up to us and we were of for another lap. Steve and I were doing well in the sprints taking 1st and 2nd in both of them and we were in 1st & 2nd in the race respectively. coming in to the last sprint our places were secure so we got out of the way and let the rest of the podium duke out their spots.
It was a fun night and having Steve as an ally out there was awesome. He rode like 3 guys. I had repeated comments about how good our teamwork was which was pretty cool!
Thurs. Day off
Friday 8/21. Match sprints. I woke up with my lower back in total spasm at about 2:00 am and didn’t sleep much after that. I went to get a massage at about 7:00 am and got some Spidertech kinesiology tape applied to my lower back. I had never used this stuff before but I have to say that it helped!
I went to the track at about 9:00 am and qualified 4th in 11.5 for the flying 200. Not great but with the bad back not too bad. The format was the top 8 to quarterfinals then the best 2 out of 3 rides through to the final. I won 2 straight rides in my ¼ final and was through to my semifinal in the evening session. I went home to get some rest and hope my back was tolerable for the evening. Throughout the afternoon I couldn’t rest very well so I decided to scratch the semifinals and put all of my effort into the team events as we were hoping to break the national record in the Team Pursuit. I went to the awards ceremony and collected 4th in the sprints as well as the best all around rider award for my age group.
Saturday 8/22. Steve Carrel & I teamed up with Kenny Williams of Seattle, WA and Jason Sprouse of Asheville, NC to compete in the 40+ Team Pursuit. We felt like we had a good shot at breaking the national record for this event that was 4:36.895 held by Larry Nolan, Kent Bostick, Richard Meeker & Jeff Fillerup. We won the race and set the new national record at 4:34.290 .
Next was the Madison. The race started well and we won the first sprint without working too hard. On the 2nd sprint a lapped team got in the way and we didn’t score. I went hard for the 3rd sprint and won it but I cracked a bit and Clark Sheehan(former postal service rider) countered with another Colorado team in tow. The race blew to bits and we lost a lap and had to settle for 3rd place.
All in all it was a very good week for Steve and I. We had a lot of fun and some really good racing!
